Time between clicks and commission reporting

January 28, 2010 on 3:24 am | In Questions and Comments | 1 Comment

Tony, your book definitely gave me a kickstart into setting up programs on google adwords. After a few campaigns/learning experiences, I think I finally found a few programs that should start working well now that the ad campaigns are generating clicks at a good cost, and I have had a chance to refine them and get the CTR up. On the few that are in this category, they have had 2-3 days of steady click activity, but I have only had one $14 commission reported, which is well below the reported EPC on CJ. I checked the advertiser’s detail pages to see if they used batch reporting, but they don’t. How long does it typically take for advertisers to report sales/commissions? I’m trying to make sure there isn’t something wrong with the way I set up the program before I get too far in. The clicks are definitely registering on Commission Junction, so the links appear solid. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. I’m sorry to have taken so long to answer your question. I’ve been working on a project (I thought would be done over a month ago) and it’s sort of pushed everything else out of my mind. It’s a website, designed myself, on the cheap, that I hope will prove there is still a lot of money to be made online, without spending a lot, and without having an enourmous amount of expertise to start with (though you will have to learn some things as you go). The best part about it is, for those of you who don’t want to develop your own site, there will be plenty of opportunity for you to earn money on MY site. I’ll be letting everyone know about it soon, on this blog, and in the newsletter, by the way.

As for the long overdue answer to your question, you will have t owait until the cj cookie expires to accurately judge your EPC, but most of the commissions – for most programs – do usually come within the first few days. There are some exceptions, like eBay, which take longer because commissns are tied to sales and sales are delayed until the end of a bidding process. My advice is to turn the program off, and wait until the referal period expires on all your traffic to calculate EPC. Remember, the EPC commission Junction reports is an average across a variety of websites, newsletters, and search programs, and your EPC will be a lot higher or lower far more often than it will match that average.

    Tony
