Question about display URLs

August 14, 2008 on 3:10 am | In Questions and Comments | 1 Comment

Hi Tony,

Thanks for hosting such a useful discussion board on affiliate marketing. I have a couple of questions for you:

1. I’ve been looking through the available programs on CJ and many of them prohibit the use of the company’s URL as the display URL. So, if I don’t have my own website and am simply doing paid search listings, what can I use as the display URL?

2. Do programs generally accept new publishers who are individuals and do not have a history on CJ? When I look at the top rated programs I wonder if they’ll even accept me at this point. How do you suggest someone who is a new affiliate marketer get started with building a commission history on CJ?

Thanks much in advance!

  1. afmember,

    I’m glad you like the site. I apologize for the delay in responding. Here are your answers;

    1. For programs that do not allow the use of their domain names in the URL (a practice that has become increasingly more common since the publication of my book), you have two choices; 1. Create a landing page, even though you don’t want a website. Or, 2. Don’t promote them. There is a third option with a small number of advertisers who create secondary domain names (like MonsterHiring.com) for advertisers to use instead.

    2. Most programs on CJ still accept individuals with little or no history with CJ. Other affiliate networks have programs that are sometimes more restrictive. As for CJ programs to start with, I used to recommend programs like Monster and eBay, but eBay no longer allows direct search (Amazon does, however, and is still a great program and a good alternative to eBay) and Monster has undergone a lot of changes since I used to promote them. I guess the short answer is that I’m not so sure anymore about good beginner programs, but maybe some of my readers with more recent start-up experience can recommend some programs that provided their first modest succcesses if they have moved on to bigger things.

    Tony
