Tracking Codes & Destination URLs

Tony,

I thoroughly enjoyed your book!  I’m about to launch my first campaign on GoogleAdwords and I’m having an issue with the tracking code vs. destination URL.  The destination URL that the affilliate program wants me to use with their supplied tracking code is not ideal for the campaign that I want to run (to many options on the page) so I would like to change the destination URL while also allowing them to track me.  Is this possible?  If so then how do I enable the affilliate program to track me if I want to use a different destination URL than the one that’s linked to their tracking code?

I reviewed your book again and didn’t see this covered so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

T

  1. T,

Some affiliate programs (Amazon, eBay, etc.) have tools to allow you to create your own links to pages on their sites, but most do not. THis doesn’t mean you can’t get this doen, though.

Try emailing the program manager (CJ, for instance, has a function that allows you to contact the program directly) and request the link you want. Many program directors will comply, many will not.

    Good luck,

    Tony

  2. Tony,

Thanks for the heads up. I emailed the affilliate program and they recommended against my request for a different destination URL. However, I noticed that the affiliate program has several text links with destination URLs that are much better – if I’m running a Google ad based on keywork search (as suggested in your book) then am I restricted to only using the tracking code and destination URL that is provided when I click on the keyword link key or can I use one of the affilliate program’s text link codes?

    Thanks again,
    T

  3. T,

Check the program terms to be sure, but most programs allowed me to use text links in my search ads.
