Most impressed with your dedication to your readers…
April 11, 2008 on 12:28 am | In Questions and Comments | 2 CommentsHi Tony,
My hat’s off to you, for in spite of industry challenges, you have continued to service your readers, consistently. I have been in business for many years and it is rare to find such commitment to one’s customers. On behalf of your readers, thank you for that.
After spending about a month reading your book and a couple others, scouring the websites and blogs, about 1 yr. PPC with my “other” business website, I’m ready to get started.
My question is this. With a website already set-up and aimed at a particular industry, ranking on the second page of yahoo for relevant keywords (no PPC for a while), would it be most profitable to use that site as a set of target landing pages in many other categories or to set up other websites, each aimed at those specific categories?
For example, my other business is real estate. The website has specific pages for Home and Garden, Money and Finance, Pet Care, Fabric Cleaning Care, Home Repair & DIY Projects.
Would my immediate (right away) ROI have greater potential by building specific sites or optimizing this one?
Thank you for your help,
Angela

Angela,
Thank you for buying my book, and for your kind words. I apologize for the delay in responding (particularly embarrassing after your praise of my committment to my readers
, but you caught me in the middle of a working vacation up on my farm, and I pretty much ignored my computer the whole trip. I’m really paying for it now, though.
Direct search marketing is my specialty – not web site marketing – so there may be a better person to ask, but I’ll tell you what I think.
If your current site is ranking high in the natural search results, I would be hesitant about making major changes, as they could affect your page ranking. I would make whatever small improvements to the existing site you feel are prudent, and roll them back if you see your natural seach rankings have been significantly impacted, or slowly continue to make additional small improvements after verifying the success of the first ones.
If you want to try for some dramatic results, I’d set up some new sites. If your current site is doing well, you hopefully have the talent needed to repeat your success with other sites. I’d focus on one or two at a time – so the job gets done right – and if you can make each of these sites even slightly profitable (and perhaps make a few more than slightly profitable), then as you add more and more over the coming months the aggregate return could grow to a significant amount.

Hi Tony,
No worries, I expected that you were on vacation of some sort.
After a short incubation period I began feeling it was best to begin with new sites/landing pages as well. Now I’ve made a full circle and back to search engine marketing as this option requires the least time and monetary resources.
Thank you for your thoughtful response. Let me know if you ever need anything.
Wishing you and yours the very best,
Angela
