Advertising your landing page

March 19, 2008 on 3:11 pm | In Questions and Comments | 1 Comment

Tony,
Much has been written about the need for a landing page to use in search marketing campaigns for programs that don’t allow direct linking. My question is how much bang for the buck do you think there is to setting up a separate ad campaign for the “landing site” itself? What percent of my total advertising budget do you think I should devote to promoting the landing site? I’m thinking this may get more folks to my site and then possibly produce sales for ads on the site without having to run campaigns for every single ad.

Any thoughts?

  1. Matty,

    The most successful landing pages have content that keeps bringing people back, well after the first paid click that might have originally brought them there. Of course, fresh content can be even more difficult and expensive than a simple advertising campaign. The trick is to get good content cheap. I have a free web template for a news site where the content is served up automatically that is a good example of how you can meet content goals without killing yourself working at it, or bankrupting yourself buying it.

    When advertising these types of pages though, you have to be prepared to lose money for possibly quite awhile before your return customer base (A.K.A. free customers) is large enough to begin to exceed the advertising costs. To be frank and honest, don’t try this without deep pockets.

    But, there are still folks making money with web sites whose only real content is comparing or organizing similar services (services with affiliate programs willing to pay you money, no matter which one the user decides to go with). With some industries (dating services and educational information, for instance) it is even possible to get a single user to sign up for several programs, earning you multiple commissions.

    These types of sites, when done right, can make money right out of the gate if they manage to generate those all important multiple conversions.

    I have a free website for educational offers that you are (of course) more than welcome to check out as an example of that kind of landing page.

    If you want to see the news site, or the educational offers site, you can see them at http://www.ThirdReport.com and http://www.Great-Colleges.com, respectively.

    If you like these sites, the HTML code is available for free at;

    Hope this helps,

    Tony
