New Advertiser with a few questions.

March 18, 2008 on 11:51 pm | In Questions and Comments | 3 Comments

I’ve just finished reading your book and am about to embark into affiliate advertising. One question I have after reading several posts on the discussion board is about the search marketing trend. I see many people discuss how “the times have changed” and how ebay doesnt allow it’s name or url on search engine ads. Because of any recent changes in the market, do you feel that there are still millions to be made by the right people, even without a website? Second, if ebay and others companies alike wont allow there names or urls to be posted in ads (this is what I understand from reading some posts), can a different url be posted but the direct link lead to ebay.com? A final question I have regards Commission Junction. Are there any advertisers on their site that have different terms and do NOT allow search advertising? The reason I ask is because I found “ebay stores” through CJ and was wondering if even though it was ebay, it would still allowed to be search marketed.

Regards,

Alex Nemeth

P.S.- Wonderful Book!

  1. Alex,

First, thank you for buying my book. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

In answer to your questions, I do still believe you can get rich with search marketing, even just focusing on direct search, but I have to admit it is tougher now, and I think that it would be wise to look at creating landing pages to allow yourself to promote more programs.

As for linking directly to eBay (or eBay stores) using a different domain name in the ad, no search engine will allow you to do this. If your ad links to eBay, it must use ebay.com in the display URL. A handful of affiliate programs allow direct search advertisers to use a second URL that mirrors their site. Monster.com, for instance, allows users to use MonsterBoard.com or MonsterHiring.com for direct search, and even (the last time I checked) allows you to bid on the keyword Monster.

CJ does offer a lot of other programs that still allow direct search, but I don’t want to post a long list of programs, knowing they could change without my knowledge.

  2. Please keep in mind I’m a newbie before reading this.
In regards to landing pages, would you feasible to have one website with multiple pages for each marketing campaign that requires landing pages. Example: http://www.123.com/1 and http://www.123.com/2 and so on? Or do need to to register a new domain and build a website for each landing page?

  3. LHForce,

Yes, if you have a broad appeals domain name, this can work. It worked better before Google’s page rank system, but I suspect they will soon de-emphasize (in the background, of course) the importance of page rank in the algorithm, because I think it has cost them money.

I have similar sites where I use the same strategy. http://www.Find-Great-Deals-Here.com/eBay, for instance.

    Good Luck,

    Tony
