Display URL in Search Engines
March 8, 2008 on 2:38 pm | In Questions and Comments | 1 CommentHi Tony and thank you for your great book!
It seems that times have changed in search engine marketing since you wrote Affiliate Millions.
I am starting now my first campaigns in Google Adwords and noticed that most of the affiliate programs I have joined, don’t allow me to display the Advertisers brand or website in the display URL. Now this is a problem, because I don’t have a website of my own to use as a landing site.
Can you please give me an honest and detailed answer how you are actually dealing with this issue in your own search engine marketing? For example, if you are promoting company ABC’s products in Google, what do you write in the display URL, because you are not allowed to write “www.abc.com”? When you write your answer, remember that I don’t have a website. How can I market ABC-companys products in Google, if I can’t show their name or website in the display URL?
Thank you very much for your answer. I thank that your detailed answer to this question will help many of us very much.

JLane,
The answer to your question is that for those sites that no longer allow you to use their domain name, I either create a landing page for them, or I stop advertising them.
Their are a small number of exceptions. Monster, for instance, doesn’t allow you to use “Monter.com” in the display URL, but does still allow (or did the last time I checked) you to use another domain they own and mirror their site on, MonsterBoard.com.
The trend since my book was published, led by eBay, has been away from allowing direct search, but I have high hopes this may reverse itself in the future. In the meantime, many companies still allow direct search, including internet giant Amazon.com, so don’t imagine that there are no opportunities left..
Also, in an effort to support my readers, I have free website templates on http://www.AffiliateMillions.com that can make setting up a landing page a lot easier.
Tony
