Google Page Rank and the AdWords Algorithm
January 14, 2008 on 5:41 pm | In Questions and Comments | 1 CommentTony,
I just started some google search marketing campaigns. There were no impressions or clicks earned from the adword campaigns, so I started to significantly overbid on the keywords just to get some results. It has been 2 days since I started the campaign, and there have still been no impressions or clicks earned from the campaign. It says that the campaigns are active, but does it take a certain amount of days from the creation of the adword campaigns before the ads start to actually run on google?
Thanks,
Seth

Seth,
Your Google ads should start running right away, and if you are having difficulties generating impressions, even when over-bidding (which is okay to do a little just to get some usable statistics, but I hope you had your budget low to cap possible losses) then there may be an issue with the site you are directing to.
You see, after my book went to print, Google instituted a page rank factor into the AdWords algorithm. If the page rank of the page you are directing to is significantly lower than the landing pages of the ads you are competing against, it could explain the symptoms you are reporting.
If you install the Google Toolbar, you can see these page ranks, and compare the ranking of your landing page to the competing ads’ landing pages.
If indeed your landing page ranking is significantly lower (even two or three points can make a big difference) you will want to seek a better landing page. I don’t know who you are advertising for, but some companies, Like Amazon, allow you to link to any of their pages, and even if you are trying to market a specific product, there are usually a few pages, at least, to choose from. Search for the highest ranked landing page, and update the destination link code for your ads.
If you are advertising a program that does not offer alternate landing pages, but you really think you could promote them well, search their site for a higher ranking landing page, then contact the program manager and describe the problem and ask him or her to create link code to the higher ranked page that you have found.
Some will refuse, and some will comply.
Hope this helps.
Tony
