Direct Product Link – how do you do it?
January 4, 2008 on 8:40 pm | In Questions and Comments | 1 CommentRather than send a potential customer to a retailers home page, is there a way to have a link go directly to a page with the product I am advertising? Assuming of course that the company allows direct search engine marketing (i.e. no web site of my own). I see that I can get a “product link” but it appears that the link would need to be pasted into a web site page, rather than in the destination URL field on my ad. I notice on CJ for example, that there is a warning that says, “You must include all the above html in your links. Any missing html, including the image source, will prevent the link from tracking properly and result in a loss of commissions.” Is this really true? Or can I just copy and paste a certain portion of the link and still get paid? Thanks in advance for anyone’s help! Love the book – VERY Helpful

Brad,
When you are told to include ALL the code, but there is no clear prohibition against direct search, you should contact the program manager and tell him what you would like to do. Quite often, I have gotten permission to use just the tracking link portion of the code (which will work). But if you do it without asking, and they don’t see impressions (the image code is usually used to track impressions) they might very well withold commissions.
By the way, if you are looking for a well branded company, with a broad range of products to offer, who still allows direct search marketing, I recently confirmed with Amazon.com that they still do allow diect search marketing (though it is hard to tell from their new terms and conditions, which is why I asked). Amazon does allow you to link to any product or page on their site (like you want to), and will allow you to use just the tracking portion of the code.
Tony
