I need more impressions… badly

September 28, 2007 on 8:55 pm | In Questions and Comments | 3 Comments

I won’t even hesitate to say that this is the one thing preventing me from making any good money with search engine marketing. So here’s the deal… I really can’t get any more than a couple of impressions a day (maybe 10-20) no matter what I do. I have tried almost everything. I have edited my ads and made the keywords phrase match so that they are specific to, but it doesn’t seem to matter. Google keeps all of my decent keywords inactive and the ones that are left only make rare appearances on searches. I’m starting to think that I dug myself into a deep hole with CTR in this campaign, since we all know Google keeps track of a campaign’s CTR in order to determine their little formula.

What makes it worse is that I am earing money on the campaign, but its coming in at such a slow pace, imagine if I could up the impressions and maintain the same click through rate.  Now what if I could do that to a couple of campaigns as well, the possibilities would be almost endless… right?

So Tony what can I do to fix this very… annoying problem? I would also appreciate any opinions and/or things that other people did that helped them to get more keyword impressions.

Thanks a lot

  1. BCRice,

The only thing you can do to increase those impressions quickly is raise your bid and/or budget. I don’t really recommend raising your bids unless you are comfortable with the risk, or unless you have reason to believe your EPC is higher. Raising your budget might be a partial solution – depending on where it is set now – but the real solution, unfortunately, is patience. If you write a good ad, it will slowly get traction. Don’t worry about the “Hole” you are afraid you are digging in terms of CTR. Google takes into account the position your ad was running in when it looks at CTR, and your ad need only have a better CTR than other ads in that position.

So, give your ads time to see if they can get any traction, or if the EPC warrants higher bids. If it doesn’t look like this is happening after you given a campaign enough of a chance, re-write the ad, or move on to another campaign.

In my experience, you’ll kiss more frogs than princes, so don’t expect to be able to turn every camapign into a winner. Identifying the losers in time is just as important.

  2. here is something I experienced. After you go through the inital 50$ billing cycle w/ Google… they bill you and get paid… impressions may go up. I went from 2500 imp. per day to 7500 per day. No changes to the ad… no changes to keyword.

If you have a really obscure keyword, and you are doing search only filtering….. maybe that is all the people that would want your offer?

  3. D_Handley is right, but it also got me to thinking… if you are wondering how many impressions are even available for aparticular search, or, which keywords are working for a particular site; KeyCompete.com offers lots of data that could answer your questions definitively.

They aren’t free, but they go far beyond free keyword research tools, and might be worth the money in some markets.
