Awesome Book

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the incredible book. This book really made the lightbulb turn on for me.

A couple of questions:

1.) I jumped right in and started my first campaign a couple days ago. The day after activating my campaign I received an email from Google stating they had de-activated my campaign because my display URL didn’t match my destination URL. This confused me a little but I’m thinking maybe this is something that’s changed since you wrote the book. It seems like most of the affiliates will not allow you to use their URL in your ad text so I’m assuming this means that we now have to create our own landing pages for search marketing. Is this correct or am I missing something?

2.) Of course I know you can’t divulge specifics on your own campaigns but in general do you recommend marketing specific products and going for commissions generated on actual sales or would you lean more towards lead or other free registration type campaigns?

These questions are also directed to any other knowledgeable individuals in this forum.

Also, any other advice for a guy just jumping into this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

V

  1. V,

Thanks for buying my book, and I am glad you enjoyed it.

In answer to your first question, while some companies no longer allow you to link directly to their sites (many still do allow it), Google has no policy against this, and so if Google dis-approved your ad based on an inaccurate display URL, that would lead me to believe that your destination link did not lead eventually to the same top-level domain as your display URL. Feel free to email the display and destination URLs to me at AffiliateSupport@AffiliateMillions.com if you would like me to take a closer look.

In answer to your second question, I’ve had my best luck with Lead/CPA type campaigns, and most particularly with those that pay for either free registrations or free downloads, but while these types of campaigns are – for obvious reasons – generally easier to make money on, I have made quite a bit of money on other campaigns as well. So I guess my advice is, jump on those “free registration” / “free download” campaigns, but don’t be afraid to try other programs as well.

    Tony

  2. Hello

I thought the book was great, and I want to start my own business with direct search marketing. I emailed google last week, and specifically asked if they would allow direct search marketing. Here is part of that response…

“Please note, Google’s affiliate advertising policy states that
your display URL and destination URL domains must agree. We monitor and
    do not allow:

    - Ads with display URLs that redirect to a different destination URL.
    - Ads with display URLs that lead to a page showing the same content as
that of the merchant site, by means of a frame, mirroring, or other
    techniques.

To answer your question, For example, if the URL of your landing page
is http://www.Google.com, your display URL must also be http://www.Google.com

So, for example if I am wrting an ad and my display URL is:

    http://www.abccompany.com

    and my desitnation URL is:

    http://www.abccompany.com/(whatever coding would go here)

would that violate these rules set forth by google?

    Thanks for your help,

    JKaz

  4. JKaz,

That would not violate Google’s rules, but you should understand that using a tracking URL wouldn’t violate the rules either.

    For instance,

    An ad like the one below with a display URL of;

    “Napster Official Site”

    Seven Day Free Trial
    Of Napster Unlimited!
    http://www.Napster.com

    and a destination URL of;

    http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-1534322-10368118?SID=AM

Would not violate Google’s policy because the fast-redirecting tracking link I got from Commission Junction and used as the destination URL does in fact link to Napster, though it goes to a tracking server first.

    Tony

(Note: Napster doesn’t allow direct search anymore, but since we are talking about Google’s rules I thought thought this made a good example, without having to use a program currently making me money as an example instead).
