Using your own redirect server
May 31, 2007 on 8:04 pm | In Questions and Comments | 1 CommentWould It not be better to use an empty page of my own, where a php script will record the searched keyword in a log file or mysql database before sending the visitor on to the LP from the offering company (the visitor would not notice this btw)?

I actually started doing this myself shortly after I finished the book. The keyword search info I get from the logs is nice, but the real reason I did it was I had a real successful ad (15k+ clicks per day, 15%+ CTR, and more than a Million clicks in the ad history) and then the affiliate program changed the tracking links. I had to edit the destination link in the ad, and that erased the ad history (it’s just like writing a new ad) and the new ad had a tough time reclaiming its position. Other ads that wouldn’t have run much at all against the ad when it had its full history behind it took a lot of my business for a long time. Lost lots of $$.
So yes, if you have the skills, definitely set up a fast re-direct, at least for your best performing ad groups, but the biggest benefit will be when they change the tracking links you won’t be forced to change your ads, you can just update your re-direct page.
